SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 24, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) --PMC-Sierra, Inc. (Nasdaq:PMCS), the premier Internet infrastructure semiconductor solution provider, today announced that TECOM, a broadband equipment manufacturer based in Taiwan, has selected PMC-Sierra's solutions for its new GPON Optical Network Terminal (ONT) designs. TECOM's Mini GPON Gigabit ONT is built around PMC-Sierra's PAS7400 SoC and targets residential and SOHO deployments that require maximum performance, high quality of service and small form factors.
"Our products must provide the highest quality of service at GbE speeds and fit into small form factor designs in order to meet European customers' requirements," said Kevin Shen, director of product line management, TECOM. "TECOM selected PMC-Sierra's field-proven GPON ONT SoC and OMCI software because it is the best solution for these requirements, and it allowed us to get a complete product to market quickly. TECOM's Mini GPON Gigabit ONT provides multiple high-quality data, voice and video applications to end users and can connect to any GPON Optical Line Terminal that carriers deploy."
TECOM's new Mini GPON ONT targets European FTTH markets, which require triple-play quality of service to the customer at Gigabit Ethernet wire speed to the home. The ONT features a GbE user interface and supports 2.5G downstream traffic to the customer at any packet size. It is based on PMC-Sierra's PAS7400 GPON ONT SoC and OMCI software package, which has proven to be interoperable with all major Optical Line Terminals (OLT) on the market at numerous interoperability events.
"PMC-Sierra continues to expand its base of GPON customers, and TECOM is an important addition," said Raphael Sankar, vice president and co-general manager for PMC-Sierra's FTTH division. "With superior performance and ready-to-use software, our GPON ONT and OLT silicon solutions are widely deployed by carriers and equipment manufacturers worldwide. PMC-Sierra is building on its position as the dominant FTTH silicon solution provider addressing the EPON, GPON, 10G-EPON and XGPON markets."
Key Features of PMC-Sierra's GPON Solutions
The PAS7400 product line integrates a GPON MAC, a VoIP subsystem, an embedded controller and GigaPASS bridge performing advanced classification, queuing and filtering, with wire-speed throughput at all packet sizes. Advanced power saving modes can lower PON deployment costs by reducing battery backup unit expenses. The reference designs come with complete GPON ONT software, featuring GPON functions, QoS bridging, VoIP, SIP and OMCI.
PMC-Sierra also provides a four-port GPON OLT SoC, the PAS5211 for Central Office equipment. Both product lines are shipping in volume and are commercially deployed worldwide. A comprehensive support package, including datasheets and application notes, is available at http://www.pmc-sierra.com/ftth-pon.
PMC-Sierra's GigaPASS FTTH Architecture Delivers Wire-Speed Performance
As speeds surpass gigabit-per-second rates, an entirely new design approach is required in access network equipment, compared with sub-gigabit/second technologies such as DSL, cable and BPON. The GigaPASS architecture integrates multiple hardware-based packet processing engine subsystems to deliver wire-speed packet processing at all packet sizes, and combines them with a control processor supporting the Linux operating system and extensible middleware platforms.
About PMC-Sierra's FTTH Family of Products
PMC-Sierra is the only supplier to support EPON (IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet in the First Mile), 10G EPON (IEEE 802.3av) and GPON (ITU-T G.984) standards. The Company's gigabit PON products are based on the robust GigaPASS(TM) FTTH Architecture that achieves sustained gigabit and greater data rates while providing a powerful 32-bit programmable processing engine executing the real-time operating system, middleware, and application-specific firmware required for high performance FTTH network access. PMC-Sierra's SoC solutions provide end-to-end gigabit-per-second bandwidth connections linking central office equipment (optical line terminals) and customer premises equipment (optical network units or network terminals) to the PON network.
